Japanese Common Academic Words(JCAW)

Japanese Common Academic Words(JCAW) Version. 1.01

Ver.1.01 Released on 22 May 2011

The academic vocabulary is a group of words which provide higher text coverage in academic texts than in general texts (Coxhead, 2000).
It is different from technical vocabulary in the sense that it provides higher coverage in any academic domain.
For students and researchers, it should be the second important vocabulary after the basic vocabulary.
There are 2591 words from Level 0 (basic) to Level 8 (super-advanced); however Level 0 (70 words) and Level I (559 words) are the most important.
Normally, Level I will cover more than 10 % in general academic texts, while it is estimated that it covers more than 15 % of the academic item texts in Wikipedia.
